Types of Valves on Wellheads

Master Valve (MV)
Function: The master valve is the primary shutoff valve on the wellhead and is used to control the flow of hydrocarbons from the well. It is the most important valve in the wellhead system and is typically located at the top of the wellhead. -
Blowout Preventer (BOP)
Function: A blowout preventer is a specialized set of valves installed at the top of the wellhead to prevent uncontrolled fluid or gas flow (blowouts) during drilling and well interventions. -
Choke Valve
Function: A choke valve is used to control the pressure in the wellhead system and is often installed in conjunction with the blowout preventer (BOP). It regulates the flow rate of fluids from the well, preventing excessive pressure buildup and allowing for more precise control of the flow.
